Lucky Dip: A collaboration between Central Saint Martins Graduate Diploma Fashion & MA Fashion Image

→ MA Fashion Image

Lucky Dip is a liminal space that sets out to explore the dichotomy between the designer and the image maker reaching a point in which human‭ ‬interaction becomes the focus regardless of the creative outputs of both parties‭.‬

As the world changes, so too does our collaborative practice. The shape of this project in normal times is brief. Over a week the members of our Fashion Image team would have partnered with members of the Graduate Diploma group to produce a number of images of their final pieces. We have worked to use the current limitations in our favour. This extended time has given us the scope to get to know each other better, produce work tailored to the themes and interests of the designers and explore virtual methods of image making for the first time.

Creativity can thrive in times of crisis, so roll the dice!

Welcome to Lucky Dip, the website of Central Saint Martins Graduate Diploma Fashion 2020. It is with pride and excitement that we, this year’s students, present our final collections digitally to an audience larger than ever before.

As our time at Central Saint Martins is drawing to a close, we find ourselves in a challenging yet extraordinary position. Undoubtedly, the global COVID-19 crisis has affected us in unimaginable ways. Nevertheless, as fashion designers it is in our nature to face the unknown with curiosity and turn obstacles into inspirations.

Lucky Dip is a virtual creative studio birthed in collaboration with MA Fashion Communication. As international lockdown measures prevented us from coming together in person, we decided to embrace our limitations and collectively create an interactive experience for the first time in Graduate Diploma history.

The students of MA Fashion Communication’s Fashion Image paired up with us, delving into our creative processes to produce imagery emblematic of our individual visions. In true lockdown style, the garments were shot over Zoom with many of us modelling ourselves while the imagemakers were in charge of art direction. A few of us had the fortune to meet up with one London-based photographer to work on-location. The imagery is accompanied by text written by MA Fashion Communication’s Fashion Journalism pathway students. Scattered all over the globe and despite time differences, we connected over Zoom and provided them with insights into our final collections.

As we embark on our future journeys, we fondly look back on our time at Central Saint Martins. We would like to thank the Fashion Department, especially our course leader David Kappo for his continuous guidance and support.

The creation of this website enabled us to think outside the box, alter our way of working and grow as fashion designers. As grim and uncertain these times may be, this digital studio demonstrates that when you join creative forces, nothing is impossible.
