Anna Heim

Womenswear designer Anna Heim, 24, is from Berlin, Germany, where she studied for her BA in fashion design at the HTW, before moving to the Graduate Diploma at Central Saint Martins. She is fascinated by imperfection and seeing the beauty in it. “It’s necessary to have weirdness in beauty to make it interesting and captivating,” she says. Anna’s collection explores the realm in-between beauty, desire and disgust. She started out by looking at her own body and acknowledging everything she likes and dislikes about it. Photographing her body and exploring what it can offer her has helped to guide Anna as to where to focus and which areas she wants to cover up. She has developed patterns in strong connection with her body, finding shapes, always fitting prototypes on herself.

For Anna, new ideas also come from exploring textile combinations, knit samples and manipulations. She likes stretch fabric and delicate details inspired by lingerie and underwear. She wants to create something desirable with a purpose, thinking of the bigger picture. Creating something of value while discovering herself – it’s a kind of therapy. This collection celebrates imperfect beauty and being comfortable with the body. Anna wants to let women and her friends know how great and beautiful they are, noting how women tend to underestimate their worth. The current situation we are living in shows that fashion has to be about more than just beauty and commerce. The purpose now should be to develop concepts that will restore nature and reuse anything that already exists, creating a circular life cycle.
