“When I am homesick, my memories are shown in my mind as a dislocation of objects and people,” Yunjie Xin, 24, says. This sense of homesickness – accentuated by living in London with her family in Shanghai – inspired Xin. She wanted to turn the sombre feelings of longing into something beautiful and poured this energy into her designs. Citing photographer Weronika Gesicka’s work on the process of memorising, Xin aims to bring her personal experiences with her family closer to her while being far away from them.

Her work is a testament to her family relationships. “I was going through family pictures when I realised that some of my memories weren’t accurate anymore,” she says. “In some photos we only got a view of a certain direction and they weren’t clear, but these memories live in my mind like a movie.” Pieced together from childhood memories of her sister and travels in the UK with her parents, Xin uses imagination to fill the parts she can’t see in the photos. “I wanted to fix the memories and leave an imprint of my parents’ body movements that they have in photos in my design,” Xin says. “This way I feel that they are always with me.”
